Bring comfortable, light clothing, walking shoes, sun hats and sunscreen plus a swimsuit in summer and warm clothing for game drives in winter.

Binoculars, cameras and bird books will be handy.

Accommodation

The lodge consists of four camps - Tandane, Mkhiwa, Emtomeni and Phiva. Each camp has six luxury suites, a plunge pool, private viewing deck, dining area and boma. All the camps are private, yet within easy access of one another and are all situated on the banks of the Makhutswi River.

Suites have an en-suite bathroom plus an outdoor shower, fireplace and a raised, private, timber viewing deck (sala) set amongst the Jackalberry trees. The sala is an ideal spot for a private luncheons or dinners.

Rooms are individually decorated in African design styles with sculptured metalwork lamp shades, taps and ceramic basins. Mosquito nets surround the kings-size beds by night. Available in each room:

Tandane camp
Tandane means "place of love". Makalali’s group entertainment / conference centre is situated at Tandane camp. The centre consists of a unique thatch-covered main building, an open kitchen and entertainment area. It has been designed to accommodate conferences, groups dining together, weddings, gala events, etc. Flame torches create a mystical and fiery African ambience at night.

Mkhiwa camp
Mkhiwa means Sycamore Fig and is name after the large fig tree which stands over the main area creating some welcome shade.

Emtomeni camp
Emtomeni, Mkhiwa’s sister camp, means Jackelberry tree. This camp was created in order to accommodate groups that need more than six rooms at a time. However each camp can still run separately with its own dining area, to
create that personal touch.

Phiva camp
Phiva means Waterbuck. However you will find Nyala here which roam the camp and call it their home.

Cuisine

Dining at Makalali is a culinary adventure, combining regional African cuisine with the multitude of cooking styles left behind by centuries of exploration on this great continent.

At Makalali, we provide an array of dining experiences. Enjoy dinner in the bush or the legendary ‘boma dinner’ under the stars. Other options include the indoor-outdoor dining area where you can enjoy a plated dinner or the more casual family style dining with other guests. We also offer a private ‘sala’ dinner for the romantic.

Dietary Requirements
Should you have any special dietary requirements, be it vegetarian food, a low salt diet, etc let us know and we will accommodate you in any way possible.

Drinking Water
We provide a complimentary bottle of mineral water in your room and water may also be purchased at your camp bar. Tap water at Makalali is drinkable but due to a fluctuation in underground supplies we cannot always guarantee consistent quality. We suggestion that tap water is utilized for cleaning purposes, brushing teeth, etc.

Food Packs
Due to changing travel arrangements and the possibility of missing a meal, we offer packed meals upon request. This service may also be provided, in the event of you having to depart the lodge early. We kindly ask that you please give us prior notice.

Room Service
Guests usually enjoy dining together in the communal dining area, however private drinks and meals in your sala can be arranged on request.

Banqueting Functions and Events
Makalali has been selected as one of the "Top ten eating establishments in SA". We can provide an array of dining experiences for any function or event held in a dining option of your choice. Choose from our entertainment centre, legendary "boma" or under the African stars in the bush.

Facilities

Babysitting
Makalali offers a child care service, where babysitters will attend to your children during meals and game drives, etc. Please notify your camp manager should you require the above-mentioned service. The standard fee for babysitting is R50 an hour.

Car Hire
We can gladly arrange this service from an outside car hire company if you so wish. Please consult your camp manager for assistance.

Gallery
The Makalali Gallery was officially opened in August of 1998 and features a unique selection of arts and crafts from all over the African continent. Please speak to your ranger or camp manager to arrange a visit to this facility.

Laundry Service
A complimentary laundry service is provided for all Makalali guests.

Private Landrover
Subject to availability and given prior notice, this service can be provided. Should you desire a private game-viewing vehicle to enhance your safari, we will try our best to arrange this for you. Our fee is R1750 per day per vehicle, which includes both game drives and any additional activities.

Runway
A gravel airstrip available for private charters. The runway is not fenced and thus we advise to be on the lookout for animals and birds. Prior permission is required before landing.

Special Occasions
Contact your camp manager in connection with special celebrations of any kind, so that champagne, birthday cakes, etc. can be arranged.

Swimming Pool
Swimming towels are provided for use at the poolside and your ‘michunda’ will assist you, should you require anything from the bar. We kindly ask you not to use your camp swimming pool after dark unless it has been arranged with your camp manager.

Therapist
Pamper yourself with a massage from our in-house therapist. Costs are available on request.

VIP turndown
A romantic VIP turndown with bubble bath, candles, rose petals and sparkling wine 340 ml can be arranged at an additional cost.

Activities

Safari’s and game drives
Game drives in open landrover’s are conducted twice daily. An experienced tracker accompanies each game vehicle to enhance the guest experience and interaction with the game. Coffee and rusks are provided on the morning game drives and guest can enjoy sundowners on the evening game drives. We also offer birding and walking safaris plus night game drives. Drive times fluctuate through the year depending on the temperatures, but are generally as follows:
SUMMER - 05h30-08h30 | 16h30-19h30
WINTER - 6h30-09h30 | 15h30-18h30

Check-in time is from 12h00, with lunch being served each day at around 13h30. Should you arrive late in the afternoon once the drive has already departed, there may be a chance that you will forfeit this drive if there are other guests accompanying your designated camp game drive vehicle. Please let us know if you are going to be arriving after 14h00 so that we can attempt to make contingency plans for both your lunch and game drive.

Star gazing
All rangers have the necessary qualifications and education to provide a tour of the heaven during a game drive.

Team building
The team building programme has been designed to accommodate smaller groups that want to have fun together but at the same time increase the efficiency of their teamwork. All our activities are within the capabilities of the average healthy person, but definitely require a group effort in order to ensure their successful completion. An individualised team building programme will be put together for each group.  Some examples options to choose from:
